From Then to Now – 123 Years of Delicious Memories created by P&S

Three generations of the P&S family graced the opening of their newest outlet at Orion City,

P&S (Perera & Sons) one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic homegrown brands, celebrates its remarkable 123-year journey on 17th July 2025, marking generations of trust, taste and shared memories. Founded in 1902, P&S began as a modest bakery and has grown into a beloved national institution, deeply woven into the fabric of Sri Lankan daily life. As generations have passed, so too has the legacy: from parent to child, from grandparent to grandchild. Today, many young Sri Lankans are rediscovering what their families have loved for decades and making it their own. With over 227 outlets islandwide, the brand’s presence is as widespread as its emotional reach. And while the scale has grown, the spirit remains unchanged: to serve food that’s honest, dependable and full of flavour.

P&S Managing Director Gihan Perera, the fourth generation of the founding family, comments: “This anniversary is deeply personal to us. It’s about the people who’ve supported us for over a century – the customers who brought us into their homes, the employees who upheld our values and the communities we’ve grown with.

We’re proud to welcome the fifth generation of the family into the business whom I am sure will ensure that the company moves successfully into the future. Today, the soul of P&S stays just as it was – humble, local and true. Even after 123 years, P&S continues to evolve, blending nostalgia with relevance.”

For over a century, it has been present in the quiet, everyday moments that matter the most: the school interval bun clutched in a child’s hand; the short eats shared at family gatherings; the ribboned cake on a birthday table; and the comforting lunch enjoyed between busy coworkers. These are not mere meals: they are precious moments created by P&S.

This year’s anniversary theme, ‘Decades of Delicious Memories’ (දශක ගණනාවක රස මතක) is an invitation to reflect and reconnect with all the ways P&S has been a part of your lives. Whether as children or as adults, the comfort of knowing your favourite snack is around the corner is unparalleled. Today, P&S invites the youth to join in making memories of their own and embrace their life’s journey with P&S to make it part of their own story.

In recent years, the brand has embraced change, engaging younger audiences through digital platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, creating content that feels fresh, familiar and fun. Whether through limited-edition product innovations, playful online interactions or a modern loyalty programme like ‘Family First’, the brand invites today’s youth to take ownership of the P&S story and make it part of their own rhythm.

Beyond taste, P&S has also expanded its role as a responsible corporate citizen. Through its CSR platform, ‘Manu Mehewara’ (මනු මෙහෙවර), the company supports causes in education, healthcare, social welfare and environmental sustainability.

Annually, P&S makes clean drinking water accessible to 10s of 1000s of families under Manumehewara. This is by installing Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants and rainwater collection & purification units in rural communities and schools.

P&S continues to serve with purpose. These initiatives align with key UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), SDG 10 (reduced inequalities) and SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production).

Moreover, P&S finds absolute pride in putting a smile on the faces of the children at the Indira Cancer Trust (ICT) and will continue to do so for the years to come.

As P&S looks toward the future, its mission remains simple but powerful: to continue crafting food that brings people together; and to do so with the same care, trust and local pride that has defined the past 123 years. P&S continues to build on its legacy by proudly taking Sri Lankan heritage to the world as part of its global mission to ‘Elevate Sri Lanka’s Finest Flavours Worldwide’, reflecting the brand’s timeless symbol of excellence, both at home and beyond.

On the special occasion of their 123rd anniversary, P&S extends a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to every Sri Lankan who has made P&S part of their lives – from the little hands that reached for their first bun, to the families who’ve shared a lifetime of memories around its flavours, making ‘Decades of Delicious Memories’.
